View count is the least useful metric on TikTok LIVE. Here are the 6 that matter.

SA brands are optimising for reach when they should be optimising for revenue. Here is what actually tells you how a session performed.

A million views on TikTok does not mean a million rand in revenue. SA brands are measuring the wrong number. Here are the six metrics that actually tell you whether a TikTok LIVE session worked.

When a brand shows me their TikTok LIVE numbers, the first thing they lead with is views. These numbers feel meaningful they are big, they are visible, and they are the currency of the broader conversation about social media success. The problem is that views tell you very little about whether a session actually worked. A session can peak at 500 concurrent viewers and convert almost nothing. A session can peak at 80 viewers and generate significant DMs, strong purchase intent, and a measurable sales day. The difference is not the reach. It is everything underneath it.

1. Average watch time

This is the single most important indicator of session quality. Average watch time tells you how long viewers stayed not just how many showed up. A session with 200 peak viewers but an average watch time of 12 minutes is a very different thing from a session with 200 peak viewers and an average watch time of 90 seconds.

Long average watch time tells you your session structure is working and your host is holding attention. Short average watch time tells you viewers are landing and leaving. TikTok users spend an average of 47.3 minutes per day on the platform they are not short of time. If they are leaving your LIVE early, the content is the reason.

Benchmark: aim for average watch time above 5 minutes per session. Elite LIVE sessions in mature markets sustain averages above 10 minutes.

2. Engagement rate

Engagement rate is total interactions (comments plus reactions plus shares) divided by total viewers. The average TikTok video engagement rate in 2024 was 4.64% LIVE sessions that beat this send a strong positive signal to the algorithm and tell you your host is successfully activating the room.

Low engagement rate with reasonable viewership usually means viewers are watching passively and not being invited into the session. That is a hosting and structure problem, and it is fixable. See the session structure framework in our post on the five things every SA brand needs before going LIVE.

3. Peak concurrent viewers with timestamp

Peak viewers on its own is a vanity number. Peak viewers with a timestamp is a diagnostic tool. When you know your session peaked at 180 concurrent viewers at the 22-minute mark, you can look at what was happening at minute 22. Was it a specific product moment? A giveaway announcement? A comment the host read aloud that the audience responded to? Understanding what drove your peak tells you what to engineer more deliberately in the next session.

4. DMs generated during and after the session

Direct messages generated by your LIVE are one of the strongest buying signals available to you. Someone who watches a session and then messages to ask about a product, a size, a delivery option that person is close to a purchase. They have already spent time with your brand. They have seen the product in context. They are asking because they want to buy.

Track DMs during and in the four hours immediately after your LIVE. Billions of searches happen on TikTok every day DMs are the private version of that search behaviour. If a particular product moment consistently generates DM spikes, feature it more prominently and earlier in your next session.

5. Replay views in the 24 hours after

TikTok surfaces LIVE replays in the feed after the session ends. Replay views tell you whether your session content had enough value that people who missed it wanted to watch after the fact and whether the algorithm considered it worth distributing in replay form.

Strong replay numbers also tell you the session content has shelf life. A session with strong replays is worth clipping into shorter videos. The platform is telling you people want this content give it to them in formats that continue to work beyond the original LIVE.

6. Follow rate during the session

New followers gained during a LIVE are among the most valuable you can acquire they found you live, spent time with your brand, and chose to stay. 49% of TikTok users say creators inspire them to explore the products and brands they promote a well-run LIVE is exactly that kind of inspirational moment. A healthy follow rate tells you your host is making an explicit invitation at the right moments and the content is giving people enough reason to say yes.

Putting it together

After every session, pull these six numbers and look for patterns across sessions. This is how TikTok LIVE improves not by going live more, but by going live more intelligently. Our free TikTok LIVE course for SA brands includes a post-stream analytics template you can use after every session to track these metrics consistently.

And if you are still working out what a healthy LIVE session looks like from the start, our post on what your first 90 days of TikTok LIVE looks like gives you the month-by-month picture including what numbers to expect at each stage.
